The Football Transfer Tavern is packed tonight as punters get into the festive spirit.
Looking past the rubbish jumpers and overplayed Christmas songs coming from the tavern’s jukebox, I notice Metro journalist Jamie Sanderson chatting to a group of Arsenal supporters.
Moving closer, I hear Sanderson explain to the punters that the Gunners are one of several European clubs who are eyeing up FC Basel defender Fabian Schar.
Arsene Wenger’s side have been strongly rumoured to be scouting the 21-year-old Swiss central defender following his impressive displays in the Champions League and now speculation surrounding the youngster has been intensified by Schar agent, Dimitrios Papadopoulos.
He suggests that the Emirates Stadium outfit are keen on his client, who is thought to be available for around £6 million in January.
“He is happy at Basle, where there is a great atmosphere within the club,” said Dimitrios Papadopoulos.
“Arsenal? I can confirm we have had contact with English clubs who want to sign him.
“There is also interest from Italian and German clubs, but we have more contact from England.”
As one of the punters in the bar recollects, the Swiss international was in fine form during both matches against Chelsea in their recent Champions League victories over the Stamford Bridge side.
This has reportedly increased the interest in Schar, but whether or not he is set for a Premier League switch remains to be seen.
