Newcastle and Tottenham have both been linked with Brazilian striker Adriano, following the termination of his contract with Serie A side Roma. However, it looks as though Alan Pardew and Harry Redknapp could be out of luck as the 29 year old considers returning back to his native Brazil to be closer to his family.
Adriano had been on a 3 year deal with Roma, but having made just 5 appearances his contract has been terminated. Newcastle and Tottenham were both supposedly poised to move for the striker, but Adriano has quashed any transfer speculation by stating his desire to move home.
The Brzilian apparently engineered his contract termination, following a string of bad injuries which restricted his playing time. He told reporters, ‘I was unlucky at Roma but perhaps it was a sign from God that it would be best for me to return to Brazil.’ It’s therefore unlikely that the Toon or Spurs have a chance of signing the former Inter man, but he did suggest that he would continue his career rather than retire. Adriano finished his statement with, ‘I leave Roma but I will not stop playing.’
Adriano, full name Adriano Leite Ribeiro, was at Inter off and on since 2001, scoring 45 goals in 120 appearances. With the Magpies on the look-out for an internationally reknowed striker to fill the place of Andy Carroll, Adriano would not have been a bad punt. He might also still be lured by Spurs, following their excellent performance in the Champions League.
I suppose it depends on whether God is a Tottenham or a Newcastle fan….
