Arsenal fans are looking up with interest at the latest claim coming from the Daily Mirror who note that Victor Valdes will be kept at Barcelona for the next 12 months and then allowed to go on a free.
The contract rebel has of course made it clear that he wishes to leave the Camp Nou and will not pen a new deal despite his current one expiring in 2014. Now it seems that Barcelona are prepared to keep the stopper for another season and allow him to leave for free after that.
Quite why they would do that when a fee of around £10 million could be obtained is anyone’s guess and vice president Josep Maria Bartomeu noted that “[President Sandro] Rosell has had contact with Valdes to make it clear that we have to leave the doors open [on him changing his mind].
“As we prioritise sporting aspects, we prefer to run out the contract until June 2014 rather than sell him this summer.
“We have no deadline in Valdes’ case, one option is to run to the end of his contract and in that case we will not sign a goalkeeper [this summer].”
Arsenal are as we all know on the hunt for another stopper and had been heavily linked to Valdes, yet now it seems that unless they are prepared to wait for another season, the club will have to look elsewhere.
Was Valdes the goalkeeper that Arsenal needed anyway? Let us know your thoughts below.
