It was a disappointing New Year’s Eve for the Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern, with the Gunners stumbling to a 1-1 draw with West Brom. A last minute penalty has left the draw feeling more like a loss, and the result has put the pressure on them as they look to take on Chelsea on Wednesday.
It’s sure to be a packed out night in the Transfer Tavern, and it’s fair to say that our resident Gunners are desperate for their side to secure a win. Another disappointing result could leave them spiralling down the table, not to mention the fact that a loss will put them further behind Chelsea in the Premier League.
The latter point is what pundit Pat Nevin has pointed to in his column over on the official Chelsea website, with the Scotsman building up to the game for the Blues. Indeed, he’s described as a must-win game for the Gunners.
Nevin said: “The Christmas run of games up until now had to be safely negotiated [for Chelsea] but in truth, the match tomorrow night at the Emirates is the most vital”.
He added: “Arsenal clearly need to win this if they have any pretensions of catching us [Chelsea] and even a draw would be seen as a great disappointment in their camp.
Though Nevin is writing from a Chelsea perspective, most Arsenal fans would probably agree with his sentiment. The Gunners have had a mixed season so far, and they’re clearly in need of points.
They’re 7 points behind Chelsea at present, and so a loss would put that back to 10. Though that’s by no means an unrecoverable tally, it will make life very tough for Arsenal in the second-half of the season.
Games between Arsenal and Chelsea are always exciting and competitive, and this clash will be no different.
Neither side can really afford to lose the game, but Chelsea certainly stand in a better position at present.
Arsene Wenger has a lot of injury problems ahead of the game, but he can have no excuses if Arsenal fail to secure any points.
