Arsenal’s squad is filled with talent and quality, but it’s fair to say that the Gunners have been up and down so far this season. They started off slowly, then they picked up massively, but now they’re struggling somewhat once again.
Certainly, things aren’t bad – they beat Chelsea over the weekend – but it’s still hard to look at the Gunners and see them certainly challenging for the top 3 or 4 by the time the end of the season comes around.
The pieces of a great team are there, of course, but they’re just a couple of players short, and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has identified one player that could dramatically improve the Gunners.
As per Sky Sports, he said: “Everyone was raving about Lucas Torreira, but he’s not that good”.
He added: “They [Arsenal] should sign Abdoulaye Doucoure at Watford – he’d walk into the team. I’d take him tomorrow morning. He’s a much better player than Torreira and he scores goals. He’s one of the most under-rated players in the Premier League – he could play for any of the top six”.
Doucoure has certainly emerged as one of the Premier League’s best midfielders over the years, with Watford really picking up a gem in the 26-year-old. He’s combative and powerful, but he also retains the ability of a modern-day technician, and he’s become the focal point of the Hornets’ squad.
Torreira has looked good at Arsenal, but there’s no denying that over the last few weeks has fallen off. Whether that’s a case of fatigue or simply a lack of form remains to be seen, but it is a problem for Arsenal. They aren’t dominating games like they once were, and that’s likely a real cause of that.
There’s a lot of creative ability in the Arsenal midfield, but without Torreira, they do lack bite. Doucoure would certainly help solve that problem, though moving for him is far easier said than done. Watford won’t want to lose their star player.
Still, Merson isn’t wrong. Torreira would struggle to get into the teams at Chelsea or Liverpool, but Doucoure would be a different prospect entirely.
