Paul Merson: Chelsea fans will be patient with Frank Lampard

It looks like it is only a matter of time before Frank Lampard becomes Chelsea manager following confirmation of Maurizio Sarri’s exit to Juventus

According to ESPN, the west London club are now set to approach Derby County this week as they look to offer their legend a three-year contract ahead of a homecoming that supporters cannot wait for.

And it is a homecoming one former pro is backing, expecting those very same fans to give Lampard time at Stamford Bridge should he take the reins as expected. So, in our latest Pundit’s Choice article, we’ll have a closer look at one of the latest takes on the Lampard saga.

“He [Lampard] comes in and the team’s there, the fans will be patient with him because he’s a legend. I think he ticks the boxes,” Paul Merson told Sky Sports.

“If he comes in too, Jody Morris has already been at the club, he knows the kids who are coming through. There are a lot more of those kids at Chelsea and it is more of a chance to give them a chance instead of bringing players in and the crowd asking what they brought him in for.”

Unlike with Sarri, it is hard to imagine the Stamford Bridge faithful turning on Lampard. When Jose Mourinho practically had the Blues in a relegation battle, there still remained support for him amongst the club’s fanbase.

Based on that, will there actually be outrage among fans if Chelsea are not competing for a Champions League spot and are drifting around sixth and quite possibly seventh in Lampard’s first season? If there is, it wouldn’t be entirely justified considering the circumstances.

That being said, you cannot help but feel that some supporters will start to ask some serious questions if results are poor and performances uninspiring. Unlike Mourinho, Lampard lacks experience and evidence that he is a coach who knows how to win, so it is going to be easy to point fingers if things start to turn ugly.

There is little doubt that Chelsea fans will initially show patience and more than what they have probably shown any other manager in the Roman Abramovich era. But this is still a fanbase with very high expectations; they might not remain patient forever.
