Liverpool have done well to maintain consistency so far this season, and that’s a core reason as to why they’ve been able to stay in the driving seat in the race for the Premier League title.
Often times, it’s the wins against the smaller teams that can define the season, and the Reds have done brilliantly to avoid many slip-ups – unlike Spurs, who lost to Burnley over the weekend.
As per Sky Sports, he said: ‘This is a dangerous game for Liverpool; the pressure is on, and they have to win. Watford have just come off a 5-1 win, Liverpool have just come out of a hard week and Roberto Firmino is injured.’
He added: ‘I’m tipping Liverpool to win it, just, but I would not be shocked one iota if Watford got something from this game. I can’t explain what an unbelievable banana skin this is.’
Of course, Watford have been on a good run of form in recent weeks, with wins against the likes of Everton and, more recently, Cardiff City.
Javi Gracia’s team are playing with confidence, and that should bode well for them. They’ve already done fairly well against a few big Premier League teams, like Chelsea and Man City, so they’re more than capable of stepping up.
Add to that the fact that the Reds have been somewhat inconsistent in recent weeks, at least with regards to succumbing to a few draws – and that means that another slip-up cannot be ruled out. Especially against a team of Watford’s quality.
Of course, if Liverpool are at their best, Watford won’t stand a chance. But if they let their foot off the gas, the Reds could be punished.
Fine margins will dictate this game, and Merson is clearly thinking that a potentially big result could be on the horizon.
