The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager to see how their players perform at the World Cup this year, and they’ll be keeping a close eye on Paul Pogba as he kicks-off his campaign with France against Australia later today.
Didier Deschamps’ France squad go into the tournament as one of the hot-favourites to eventually win the competition, and rightly so. The squad is packed with some of the most talented players from all over Europe, so they’ll certainly take some stopping in Russia as they seek revenge for Euro 2016.
Pogba is widely expected to start in the France team ahead of Corentin Tolisso (valued at £36 million by Transfermarkt) in central midfield, but a poor performance or an ill-advised display of dissent could eventually see him replaced by Bayern Munich’s star.
There’s no doubt about it, Pogba can be a world beater on his day and almost single-handedly win matches for his side, but question marks remain over his mentality and his willingness to dig deep for his teammates.
In a tournament as competitive and prestigious as the World Cup there’s absolutely no room for passengers and, as we know, Pogba has been guilty of becoming one at times during his two-year stint with the Red Devils.
Mourinho hasn’t allowed him to get away with poor performances and neither will Deschamps with the excellent Tolisso sitting on the bench waiting for an opportunity to showcase his talents.
At 25-years-old it’s a perfect time for Pogba to truly announce himself on the world stage by orchestrating proceedings from the heart of the France midfield, and he can have no excuses when Les Blues begin the tournament against a below-average Australia side.
If he fails to perform then Deschamps will have no qualms about replacing him with Tolisso for their tougher fixtures against Peru and Denmark, so he must step up to the occasion later today with a performance to remember.
