The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are concerned by reports which claim their transfer target Jorginho would prefer a move to their local-rivals Manchester City this summer.
Jose Mourinho’s side have been heavily criticised this season for both the standard of their performances and their results, but with just a few weeks remaining in the season they are in pole position to finish in 2nd place in the Premier League and have an Fa Cup final on the horizon. However, the Red Devils faithful will certainly be expecting their club to make a handful of acquisitions in the summer window in order to bolster their chances of going head-to-head with Manchester City for the Premier League title next season.
And according to The Sun, United are hoping to boost their midfield ranks this summer with the signing of Napoli’s Italian international Jorginho (valued at £36 million by Transfermarkt). Considering Michael Carrick is retiring and Marouane Fellaini’s contract is due to expire in June, United’s interest in Jorginho is both pragmatic and forward-thinking, as the quality he would install into the club would turn Mourinho’s centre-midfield into an incredibly formidable proposition.
Alongside the likes of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic, Jorginho would make United’s midfield a genuine force to be reckoned with, and his presence should allow Paul Pogba to thrive in a role with greater freedom behind the striker. Pogba has received plenty of criticism this season due to his lack of consistency and tendency to go missing for long periods of time, but his cause hasn’t been aided by the fact he has been deployed in a role where he is forced to compromise his creative qualities.
However, Jorginho’s preference to operate in a deep-lying midfield role should enable Pogba to roam forward and exert his influence on proceedings in the final-third of the pitch. Napoli’s play-maker also possesses an excellent range of passing, so the French international should benefit from his ability to find his teammates in key areas of the pitch.
It seems that Mourinho will face a tough task in convincing Jorginho to make the switch to the red half of Manchester over the blue half this summer, but if he manages to fend off competition from Guardiola’s citizens then Pogba will be well placed to silence his doubters next season.
