Penalty Notice – The Worst Penalties. Ever.

Who the hell let him take one?

It is written in stone that whenever we play the Germans, it must go to extra time and then penalties. To celebrate this simple twist of fate, we look at those who have embarrassed themselves and invited shame and ridicule from 12 yards.

David Beckham v Portugal (2004)

Golden Balls blamed the pitch but I blame him and his showboating ways. He did make up for it, however, by scoring the winner from the spot against Argentina two years earlier.

Roberto Baggio v Brazil (1994)

The stake could not have been higher (or his spotkick for that matter) as this dreadful miss handed Brazil the World Cup in USA 94.

Pat Nevin v Manchester City (1980s)

Chelsea’s Pat Nevin was normally so reliable at converting penalties. Commentator John Motson can hardly believe his eyes at what was witnessed during this game.

Berbatov v Everton 2009

The misfiring Bulgarian’s miss in the FA Cup semi final perfectly encapsulates his Man. Utd career so far.

Chris Waddle v Germany (1990)

It was a tossup between his costly miss and Stuart Pearce’s but Waddle clearly made no attempt to place it and probably caved in under the sheer magnitude of the situation he was placed in.
