The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern were delighted with their side’s tenth straight victory in the Premier League this weekend.
Pep Guardiola took his high-flying side to the King Power Stadium this weekend with plenty of reason to fear the Foxes after last season’s horror show in Leicester. Yet there was to be no repeat of the previous year’s destruction, as the Citizens continued their perfect away record this season with a 2-0 victory that never looked in doubt after a stunning Kevin De Bruyne strike gave them a two-goal cushion in the 49th minute following Gabriel Jesus’ first half effort.
The victory capped off a wonderful afternoon for Guardiola’s men in which Vincent Kompany returned to captain the side in his first league appearance since a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth in August.
However, the afternoon did not entirely quash Guardiola’s anxieties over his side’s strength in depth at centre-back, as John Stones was forced off with a nasty looking hamstring injury after half an hour.
With only four recognised centre-backs at the club and Kompany’s recent injury record a viable cause for concern, City should be heavily pursuing the acquisition of a central defender in January if they wish to challenge for both the Premier League and the Champions League this season.
And, according to The Daily Mirror, City are already looking to rectify their defensive shortage with a January swoop for Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk, despite continued interest from Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
After the injury of Stones, City look vulnerable in defence with the fixtures set to arrive thick and fast in the hectic winter schedule, so the arrival of Van Dijk would certainly be a welcome relief for the Citizens.
Due to the lack of depth in central defensive positions, City are now just an injury or suspension away from having no recognised back-up in this position, and this will deeply concern Guardiola.
If City are unsuccessful in their pursuit of Van Dijk in January, they will need to find an alternative target to provide the adequate cover they require at centre-back to compete for the highest honours this season.
