Liverpool are on red alert as the recent World Cup winner Capdevila rejected a new contract at Villarreal.
Reina, a close friend of Capdevila, will be instrumental in helping secure the services of the veteran defender who rejected Villarreal’s offer of a one-year deal as he was looking for a longer extension.
He will be now available for free in the summer unless an improved offer is made but Villarreal may be willing to let the World Cup star go on a cut price deal in January if no agreement can be made before then.
Capdevila’s agent Horacio Gaggioli hinted at a strong possibility the defender could be looking at pastures new, but it depended on any new offer from Villarreal.
He said: ‘There are offers on the table but we’re waiting on Villarreal. He’s happy there but he would also like a contract that reflects his work on the field. We will have further talks in the future.’
I personally think it would be a sound move for the club. Liverpool have struggled with injuries at the back this season and Capdevila is a wealth of experience. Perhaps parting with any cash for a move in January would be a little too hasty, but the prospect of a free transfer would be a very attractive proposition indeed.
