The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly concerned by rumours linking Toby Alderweireld with a move away from the club this summer.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side look set to qualify for the Champions League this season ahead of their move to a new state-of-the-art stadium next season, but the evident progress that is being made in North-London could still result in the departure of a handful of key players this summer. Toby Alderweireld was sidelined with a hamstring injury for a large portion of the season and since he returned he has hardly been afforded an opportunity by Pochettino.
The Belgium international’s lack of first-team involvement has sparked plenty of reports which link him with a move away from the club due to disagreements over a proposed new contract. Whether Alderweireld will depart the club remains to be seen, but it seems there’s clearly an underlying issue which is yet to be resolved, so the Lilywhites supporters may be forced to wave goodbye to a genuine fan-favourite this summer.
If Alderweirled does indeed depart the club this summer, Pochettino should make a bid to sign Eric Bailly (valued at £31.5 million by Transfermarkt) from Manchester United. Like Alderweireld, Bailly has spent plenty of the season on the sideline through injury and thus far he has only appeared on 16 occasions for the Red Devils.
Bailly is widely-regarded as one of United’s best defenders, so Jose Mourinho will be reluctant to sell him this summer, but considering the depth of his options at centre-back, he could be convinced into a deal if the price is right. The Ivory Coast international is an intelligent reader of the game, effective in possession and physically commanding, so he would have no problem settling into Pochettino’s first team next season.
With experience at United already under his belt, Bailly should be mentally equipped to deal with the pressures associated with playing for a top-four club. At 24-years-of-age, Bailly is a talent for both the present and the future and, if Alderweireld ultimately decides to depart Tottenham in the summer, the club should do everything they can to prise him away from Old Trafford.
