Perfect alongside Bailly: Arrival of £45m-rated defender would take Man Utd to the next level

The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for Jose Mourinho to bring in a new defender this summer. The Red Devils’ attack is unstoppable, but their defence is comparatively poor.

Fortunately, the presence of Eric Bailly gives the Red Devils a decent platform for success. He’s been solid this season, and so whoever Mourinho may target this summer would need to play alongside the Ivorian.

One player that could be perfect alongside Bailly is young Englishman John Stones, who is rated at £45 million by Transfer Markt. Stones has fallen down the pecking order at Man City this season, and a move across Manchester could make perfect sense for the Red Devils.

Stones, though his game time has been limited as of late, is an unbelievable defender on his day. Though famed for his quality on the ball, he’s also a brilliant reader of the game, and rarely does he misjudge a tackle or a pass. On top of that, he’s very strong in the air, meaning that he’s a fantastic threat from set pieces, both defensively and offensively.

Naturally, though, his main skill comes with the ball at his feet. He can pass better than most midfielders, and that’s a hugely influential trait to possess as a defender. This would be particularly effective when contrasted with Eric Bailly. Bailly is more of a strong, physical and robust defender – and Stones is a brilliant contrast to that.

As such, the pair could form a deadly duo for Man Utd – bringing together the perfect balance of raw power, pace, technique and passing. Man Utd have struggled defensively throughout this season, but signing a player like Stones could be just what they need.  Not to mention, Mourinho is fantastic at developing defenders, and so the Englishman could go to the next level under him.

He won’t be cheap, but he’d be worth every penny.
