The Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been delighted by their side’s form in recent weeks which has allowed them to steer clear of the relegation zone with plenty of time to spare.
Newcastle United’s tremendous run of form came to a disappointing end on Monday evening as they suffered a 1-0 defeat against Everton at Goodison Park, but that has not prevented the supporters from feeling ambitious about their prospects next season. Jamaal Lascelles has provided the club with a defensive springboard for the club to thrive off during the second-half of the season alongside Florian Lejeune, and recent reports suggest Rafa Benitez could be set to add another quality centre-back to his ranks this summer.
According to The Daily Mirror, Newcastle are set to go head-to-head with West Ham United, Leicester City, Everton and Newcastle for the signature of Jonny Evans this summer in a deal which looks set to be worth a measly £3 million. Evans’ quality and rich experience whilst playing for Manchester United could prove to be a valuable asset for the club, and his presence on Tyneside alongside Jamaal Lascelles would hand the club a formidable centre-back pairing.
Newcastle’s captain has been in immense form for the club this season and his performances have been one of the most fundamental reasons for the Magpies surge up the Premier League table. Lejuene has also played a crucial role, but Evans’ arrival could eventually knock him down the pecking order at St James’ Park.
Evans has both the experience and the defensive brain to enable Newcastle to step up another level and push for European football next season. At 24-years-old Lascelles still has plenty of room for improvement, and alongside Evans he would have a fantastic opportunity to develop into one of the most respected defenders in English football.
Combining experience, intelligent footballing brains and winning mentalities together, Evans and Lascelles would provide a sturdy defensive platform for the club to push for a Europa League place next season, so Benitez should do everything he can to bring the Northern-Ireland international to Tyneside when the season reaches its conclusion.
