Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager to see who Pep Guardiola will bring to the club in order to build on the successes of last season.
The Citizens cruised to the Premier League title, finishing 19 points ahead of their rivals Manchester United in the race for the trophy. Guardiola also picked up the Carabao Cup on the way to breaking multiple Premier League records. Despite their success, they aren’t perfect, and the Spaniard has hinted at one or two major signings.
A long-term replacement for Fernandinho will be a priority this summer. The Brazilian is 32-years-old, and no-one else is capable of operating as a defensive midfielder, an injury would throw Guardiola’s plans into turmoil. City have targeted Napoli midfielder Jorginho, but the Italian is not a natural defensive midfielder. As well as Jorginho, they should attempt to sign Wilfred Ndidi from Leicester.
Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the Nigerian international made 33 appearances in the Premier League last season, notching four assists. He is a solid defensive midfielder that would allow the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva to flourish ahead of him. Ndidi is the protection that Guardiola needs.
The 21-year-old made more tackles per 90 minutes than all of Manchester City’s midfielders including Fernandinho as well as Jorginho, according to Squawka. Ndidi also made more blocks and clearances as well as winning more aerial duels than City’s current midfielders as well as the Italian.
He is still young and developing, under Guardiola, he could become a world-class midfielder.
