The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the new campaign after their side secured their place in the Champions League for the third successive season.
With the move into the new stadium on the horizon, it was pivotal that Pochettino led Spurs to a top-four place this season in order to christen their new home with the highest standard of football. Despite a typical end of season wobble, the Argentine manager managed to lead his side to a place in the Champions League next season, so the club should be able to attract talent of the highest quality during the summer window.
There are murmurs emerging from the club which suggest a whole host of players could be leaving the club this summer, including Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele. The resident Lilywhites in the tavern believe that neither player should be sold this summer, but if either Wanyama or Dembele eventually depart there’s no doubt a proven replacement will need to arrive in North-London.
According to reports in The Daily Mail, Tottenham are already lining up a central-midfield player who could bolster their options, namely Napoli’s deep-lying playmaker Jorginho (valued at £36 million by Transfermarkt). The Italian has spent the majority of the season pivoting Napoli’s midfield in their bid to clinch the Serie A title, and he has gained plenty of admirers with his performances.
His extensive range of passing and ability to carve open defences from deep has proven to be a valuable weapon for the club, so he would be an ideal player to sit alongside a destroyer type player, such as Eric Dier. Together, Dier and Jorginho would provide both the perfect balance between brains and brawn in Tottenham’s midfield and an excellent platform for the midfield to build on.
The new stadium move could cripple Spurs in the transfer market this summer, so it’s easy to understand why there is a suggestion that they will offload a handful of new players to finance their ambitions in the transfer market. Daniel Levy will need to be typically shrewd in order to ensure the club continue to progress whilst balancing the books and, although Jorginho won’t come cheap, he must find a way to finance a deal for the Serie A star if either Dembele or Wanyama leave this summer.
