The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern were delighted by the performances of their captain Jamaal Lascelles last season at the heart of their defence, and they are desperately hoping he will remain at St James’ Park this summer.
Although the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Kenedy and Ayoze Perez could all make their own individual claims for Newcastle’s standout performer of the 2017/18 season, there’s no doubt that Lascelles was the club’s most consistently excellent player. His performances for the Magpies have sparked interest from Liverpool according to The Independent, however, the 24-year-old has publicly expressed his admiration for the club and his personal desire to remain on Tyneside according to the Northern Echo.
The news has been greeted with delight by the resident Magpies propping up our bar, but they believe their club will need to secure the signature of a new centre-back to support, or even replace Florian Lejeune at the heart of the back-four next season.
Considering Chelsea look set to undergo a significant overhaul in their squad this summer, Rafa Benitez should consider making a bid to secure the services of Gary Cahil as he enters the final year of his contract. With Cahil set to turn 33-years-old this year, it’s likely that Chelsea will be willing to cash in on him rather than lose him for nothing in 2019, so Benitez should take full advantage if that proves to be the case.
Although Cahil (valued at £13.5 million by Transfermarkt) is beginning to show signs of wear and tear, he would be a valuable addition to Newcastle’s squad next season, and alongside Lascelles he would provide a breadth of experience which would undoubtedly help the aspiring England international to earn his first international cap after the World Cup.
Newcastle enjoyed just about the best season they could have hoped for last time out as they stormed to a 10th place finish despite being widely tipped for relegation early in the season, but they will struggle to emulate their achievements if they fail to add quality options down the spine of their squad in the summer.
Signing Cahil represents a realistic and cost-effective way to strengthen their defensive options, and if they are successful in luring him away from Stamford Bridge they could provide Lascelles with an ideal partner for the new season.
