Perfect partner for Shelvey: Newcastle must replace Diame with 12-assist maestro this summer

The Newcastle United fans are hoping their club will make a real statement of intent by keeping Rafa Benitez and investing in quality players this summer to ensure they continue the progress they made in the most recent campaign.

With speculation persisting about Benitez’s future, it’s no wonder the Newcastle supporters lining up our bar are feeling apprehensive, but they remain optimistic that the Spanish mastermind will remain at St James’ Park. However, it’s likely that Benitez will want to see big changes at the club in order to remain at the helm, beginning with a significant increase in his transfer budget.

The Daily Express are reporting that Benitez has requested £100 million and full control over transfers in order to stay at the club this summer, and if his demands are eventually met by Mike Ashley he would be foolish not to consider an audacious move for Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey. Ramsey was crowned as the Gunners’ player of the year yesterday at the end of a campaign where his performances were a rare bright spark amidst an underwhelming campaign for the club

The Wales international managed to score 11 goals and provide 12 assists from his 32 appearances whilst operating in a box-to-box midfield role, and the quality of his end product strongly suggests he is back to his very best after a couple of average seasons at the Emirates Stadium. The Arsenal supporters are desperately hoping that Ramsey will sign a new contract this summer as his current deal is set to expire in 2019, however, he could be tempted to embark on a new challenge after more than 7 years with the club.

Although Ramsey is bound to have offers from prestigious clubs across Europe, the prospect of joining Benitez and helping the Spanish manager to lead Newcastle into a new era of success could persuade him to make a shock switch to Tyneside.

Mo Diame was in exceptional form alongside Jonjo Shelvey throughout the second-half of the season, but if Newcastle swapped Diame for Ramsey they would have a formidable pairing who could match the standard set by midfield combinations at top-four clubs, so Benitez should make an enquiry into Ramsey’s availability this summer.

Newcastle are approaching a cross-roads this summer which will determine whether they wish to establish themselves as a top-flight side who have aspirations to break the status quo in the Premier League, or a side who are merely happy to achieve survival.

Naturally, the supporters are hoping they will become the former, and signing Ramsey would represent a huge step in right direction for the Magpies.
