The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to the beginning of a new era this summer, and they are eager to see a handful of new players arrive at the club alongside their new manager.
The departure of Arsene Wenger will undoubtedly be the headline making story of the summer for the Gunners, but recent reports suggest the arrival of a new player could take some of the limelight away from the new manager. According to recent reports in The Sun, Arsenal are interested in signing Roma lynchpin Radja Nainggolan, although they face competition from Manchester United and Chelsea for his signature.
Nainggolan has long been subjected to rumours linking him with a move to the Premier League throughout his time at the Stadio Olimpico, but after four years at the club he might finally be ready to embark on a new challenge this summer, especially considering he is shortly set to turn 30. Without Champions League football to bring to the table it will certainly be a struggle to convince Nainggolan to join Arsenal over Manchester United in the summer, but that should not deter their interest.
The Belgian international (valued at £40.5 million by Transfermarkt) has been one of Roma’s standout players since he joined the club from Cagliari in 2014 with his tenacious performances in central midfield. Nainggolan is the complete midfielder; he is technically gifted, a diligent work-horse and a genuine threat in the final-third, so Arsenal would be foolish to miss an opportunity to bring him to the club.
In 199 appearances for the club, Nainggolan has scored 31 goals and provided 27 assists – a brilliant record for a central-midfield player. The level of quality he could bring to the Emirates is exactly what Arsenal need to return to the Champions League next season, as the likes of Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny have fallen below the standard that is required to compete at the top-level, whilst the future of Jack Wilshere remains severely in doubt.
Arsenal would make a real statement of intent regarding their future ambitions by signing Nainggolan this summer, so they must do everything they can to prise him away from Roma.
