The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern have ran out of superlatives to describe the quality of their side’s form so far this season, but despite this they are eager to see a handful of new players arrive at the Etihad this summer.
Pep Guardiola has orchestrated one of the most imperious campaigns that the Premier League has ever seen this season, but the Spaniard is hardly one to rest on his laurels. Guardiola’s quest for perfection is just getting started, and the Citizens faithful propping up our bar cannot wait to see what’s in store for them next season.
Naturally, the financial superpower will dip into the transfer market in search of world class this summer in order to strengthen their title-defence. According to Spanish media outlet Don Balon, Guardiola is desperate to sign Real Madrid’s Isco during the summer window to add further quality to his creative options in midfield.
Isco (valued at £67.5 million by Transfermarkt) has been in and out of Zinedine Zidane’s starting eleven all season, so it’s plausible that he will seek a move away from the Bernabeu in order to acquire more first-team opportunities. Although David Silva is showing no sign of reaching his sell-by-date even at 32-years-old, Guardiola will eventually need to replace the player who City fans affectionately refer to as ‘Merlin’, and there are very few, if any better candidates than Isco.
The 26-year-old Spaniard has everything Guardiola expects from his attacking midfield players: creativity in abundance, a determined attitude, versatility and a deadly instinct in goal-scoring situations. To further enhance Isco’s case for a move to the Etihad, he already has three Champions League titles to his name and will have a shot at a fourth when Los Blancos face Liverpool in Kiev at the end of the month.
Isco’s experience playing for a club of Madrid’s stature will have installed a resilience into his mentality which will be needed for City to effectively defend their Premier League crown next season. Whether Isco will be enticed by a move to City remains to be seen, but if he is willing to entertain an offer from the club then Guardiola should do everything in his power to secure a perfect long-term replacement for David Silva.
