Phil Thompson is a bit of a legend to many people, Liverpool fans love him because of his allegiances to the club, and students love him because of his work on Soccer Saturday. Essentially he is a bit of a clown and after Chris Kamara he is one of the funniest things on that show.
Over the weekend however he may have taken his ‘tomfoolery’ one step too far, because according to our friends at CaughtOffside and ClickLiverpool he has let a black and white striped cat out of the bag and announced that the clubs search for a left back is over, and proclaimed that Jose Enrique is essentially a done deal.
Spaniard Enrique made the switch from La Liga to the Premier League in 2007 and Newcastle paid Villareal £6.3million for his services beating off competition from Manchester City and interestingly Liverpool. It is fair to say that his start to life in England was not exactly stellar, his arrival was met with the clubs dip in form, and that did not help him to settle. However, relegation to the Championship appears to have helped his game, his form last year was terrific and so far this season he looks like a fantastic defender.
Kenny Dalglish has been searching around for a left back since his arrival, he farmed Paul Konchesky out on loan and has mostly used other players as makeshift full backs ever since, so Enrique would solve a lot of problems for the Scot.
The player has been linked with moves to numerous clubs, including Manchester United, but according to former Anfield great Thompson, there is a deal in place for the Summer, he told Norwegian channel TV2:
“From what I’ve heard, yes the deal has been done and he will come to Liverpool,”.
You would assume that someone who worked at the club for a good few years and is still in attendance at many matches would have a pretty good idea of what is going on, so it is probably fair to say that he may be correct. The fact that he felt the need to blab it all over the media though leaves me slightly uncertain about the validity of the claims, if it was 100% nailed on, would he have run his mouth in such a way? I am not sure.
Either way Enrique is a quality player, something that Thompson went on to acknowledge:
“It’ll be interesting because he’s done very well. He had a difficult first season coming into the Premiership a couple of years ago but he really understands the game now….He’s one of those full backs who is good going forward but he’s also a good defender and I think that is the main thing.”.
I couldn’t agree more with the assessment that Thompson gives of the player, he is a fine well rounded left back. He is excellent coming forward but he never neglects the defensive side of his game either. ‘Tommo’s’ ramble suggested that the deal could be worth £15million, a pretty good piece of business for Newcastle when you consider what they paid for him a few years ago.
If this one is accurate then Liverpool have signed a quality player and it addresses one of their biggest ongoing problems, and who knows with a few more new faces this Summer how high they could challenge up the table next term.
