The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to a summer of rebuilding at Stamford Bridge. It’s been a tough season for the Blues, with Antonio Conte’s men struggling to maintain their form from last season, and so improvement is clearly needed if they are to catch up with the likes of Man City and Man Utd next season.
In the past, the Blues have moved quickly to tie up deals. The likes of Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas were targeted long before the start of the following campaign, and according to the Daily Mail, Chelsea could be looking to do more of the same this year.
The Daily Mail are reporting that Chelsea are leading the race for Man Utd defender Luke Shaw, with the Blues apparently open to the idea of rescuing him from the clutches of former boss Jose Mourinho.
Shaw was, of course, one of the Premier League’s most impressive defenders as a teenager, but he has stagnated during his spell in Manchester. Marred by a mix of form and fitness issues, he’s found it tough to make an impact.
At Chelsea, though, Antonio Conte has made a habit of turning players’ form around, with the likes of Marcos Alonso and Willian turning into superstars under the Italian.
Our landlord is keen to see if he can do the same thing with Shaw, though he recognises that a move won’t be easy.
A move for Shaw, who is rated at £12.3 million by Transfer Markt, makes sense. Chelsea could do with a defensive rebuild, given their poor recent defensive form. They’ve made shocking errors in recent weeks that have cost them games, and so it’s clear that a few new faces could make all the difference.
Shaw, for all of his criticism, certainly hasn’t been the worst player at Man Utd this season, and if Conte can get him fit and firing, the Englishman can still turn into the player we all thought he could be a few years ago.
