Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their team thump basement club Swansea City 5-0 on Boxing Day to move back above Tottenham into fourth place in the Premier League table.
Jurgen Klopp’s men has relinquished the final Champions League spot earlier in the day as a Harry Kane-inspired Spurs breezed past Southampton at Wembley, yet the Reds produced their own attacking masterclass to usurp Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the table. A brace from Roberto Firmino as well as strikes from Philippe Coutinho, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain secured a comprehensive victory for the Merseyside giants, who will go into Saturday’s clash with Leicester City full of confidence after extending their unbeaten league run to 11 games.
Subsequently, there have been several delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from Tuttosport (via ESPN), which suggests that Juventus are seeking to up the ante in pursuit of Reds ace Emre Can.
The future of the 23-year-old has been subject of speculation for a while now given that his current deal at Anfield expires in the summer, and as of yet no extension has been agreed.
That leaves the Germany international with the option of penning a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club next week, and Juventus are one side reportedly interested in luring Can away from Merseyside next year.
And recent reports suggest that the Serie A champions ‘could’ be readying a player plus cash deal involving Marko Pjaca, a 22-year-old winger who has played 20 times for the Italian giants, netting just one goal in the process.
And with the transfer window to reopen in January, and Liverpool no nearer a new deal with Can, the Reds face a testing few weeks in their bid to convince the 23-year-old to remain at Anfield.
Landlord’s verdict: He may not have made a great start to life at Liverpool, but Emre Can has played an increasingly important part in Jurgen Klopp’s plans in the last 18 months or so.
And it appears that the 23-year-old wants that importance reflected in a new contract at Anfield, but as of yet that doesn’t appear overly forthcoming given that he has not agreed an extension, leaving his future at the club very much uncertain.
Juventus have long been linked with Can, and a player plus cash deal ‘could’ be in the offing as the Italian giants are reportedly readying a move involving Marko Pjaca in exchange for the Germany international, leaving the ball firmly in Liverpool’s court going into the January window.
