‘Please make this happen!’ – Southampton fans on Twitter call for January signing following sale of Van Dijk

The Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their club will use the money acquired from the sale of Virgil van Dijk to bring new talent to the St Mary’s Stadium this January.

Following months of persistent transfer speculation, Van Dijk finally completed his dream move to Anfield yesterday in a transfer worth £75 million – a new world-record for a defender. Although the Saints faithful propping up the bar are naturally disappointed to see a player of such high quality depart the club, they are also relieved that their side can finally move forward without speculation concerning his future dominating the headlines throughout the British media.

Southampton have done extremely well to acquire £75 million for Van Dijk, but they need to ensure that they reinvest the money in quality talent that are suited to the demands of the English top-flight.

How Mauricio Pellegrino and the Southampton hierarchy chose to spend the money acquired from Dan Dijk’s sale will heavily influence the club’s future prospects in the Premier League, so the January window will be a pivotal month for The Saints this season and beyond.

According to reports in The Daily MailSouthampton are lining up a move for their former academy product and current Arsenal employee Theo Walcott.

The same report states that the south-coast outfit are reluctant to commit to a permanent transfer just yet, and that they would prefer to bring Walcott back to the club on a loan deal initially.

The majority of Southampton fans on Twitter are eager to see Walcott back in the red and white shirt after more than ten years away from the club, but a handful of supporters want to see him return on a permanent basis rather than on loan.

Here’s what the fans had to say about a move for Walcott in the last few days…
