With only a year left to run on his contract, Nacho Monreal’s future could lie away from Arsenal.
The Spaniard has been linked with a move to Barcelona (via Mundo Deportivo), as the club seeks cover for left-back Jordi Alba having sold Lucas Digne to Everton during the summer transfer window.
Arsenal boss Unai Emery, however, has made it clear he is determined to keep Monreal at the Emirates.
Speaking ahead of the Gunners’ clash with Newcastle United, Emery told reporters (via Daily Mail): “After two weeks, after two months and now, I can say that I am very happy with him because he is 32 years old but I think physically, with his performances with us in matches, he is playing with a very good level.
“The rest of that, for me, is very important. I think we need to find a new contract with him to stay with the Arsenal team.”
Emery’s words will come as good news to Arsenal supporters, who made their feelings about Monreal known on Transfer Tavern. Amid the speculation linking the Spain international with a move to the Nou Camp, Transfer Tavern decided to ask the Arsenal faithful should the club keep hold of him.
Unsurprisingly, Arsenal supporters were in favour of £11.7m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Monreal remaining in north London with 71% of fans voting yes.
The former Malaga man has become a fan favourite since joining the club back in 2013 and is easily one of the team’s most consistent performers.
Arsenal are often criticised for their defending; however, Monreal is usually very capable when it comes to that department and, 1v1, there are probably not many better full-backs in the Premier League.
With that in mind, Arsenal should definitely do all they can to keep Monreal at the club.
