The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern have been desperate to see Erik Lamela back in the first team over the last few weeks. He’s been out for the entire season so far, alongside most of last season, and so his return has been a long time coming. Fortunately, though, the date of his comeback is seemingly edging closer.
According to Ben Dinney on Twitter, Pochettino has revealed that Lamela could return as early as this week, describing him as ‘in contention’ for Tottenham’s clash against Leicester City on Tuesday.
Pochettino says Erik Lamela "is in contention" for the game on Tuesday. "Always in a very busy schedule you need everyone fit to help and that is very good news for the team." #COYS

This is massive for Tottenham for a few reasons. Firstly, and most importantly, the Argentine has been out for so long, and with fans concerned that he might never play for the club again, he now looks destined to return in a Tottenham shirt. It’s also significant in that Tottenham have so many games coming up, particularly over Christmas, and so the more bodies that Pochettino has available the better.
What’s more, Lamela is pretty unique in this side in that he is a rampaging, pacy attacking midfielder. Tottenham’s attacking options are strong, but there is nobody else quite like that in Pochettino’s arsenal, and so he’ll be desperate to be able to call on Lamela once again.
Lamela has been an inconsistent player during his tenure at Tottenham, but he could be just who they need to take themselves to the next level.
On his day he is unplayable, and so if Pochettino can bring him back and bring the best out of him, Tottenham’s attack could be a scary proposition.
