The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern need some cheering up after their side’s clash with Juventus last night. Despite controlling the game for the best part of 60 minutes, the Italian side were able to turn the fixture around in a matter of minutes – owing to goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala. It certainly wasn’t the result that our resident Lilywhites were looking for.
Fortunately, a recent transfer report from the Mirror does offer a reason for optimism in North London.
According to the Mirror, Tottenham have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Fulham whizkid Ryan Sessegnon, who the Lilywhites are said to be open to spending a whopping £35 million on. They report that the pacey Englishman has made Tottenham his first choice destination – owing to Mauricio Pochettino’s focus on youth players and the team’s London-based location.
It’s early for clubs to already be thinking about the summer, but in Tottenham’s case, this is an important area of focus. The future of Danny Rose is looking increasingly uncertain, whilst Ben Davies hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory over the last few weeks – meaning that a new left-back could be a valuable acquisition this summer.
For Sessegnon’s part, the defender has emerged as one of the hottest young players in Europe, having become one of Fulham’s best players at the tender age of 17.
Pochettino has often placed a focus on young players, as he did with the likes of Dele Alli and Harry Kane, and so he would likely have no concerns about involving the teenager immediately. In terms of raw talent, he has it all – he’s quick, excellent offensively, great defensively and he has a high skill ceiling.
Certainly, with several other teams reportedly interested, this isn’t going to be easy for Tottenham, but they’ve undoubtedly made a strong start in this race.
Tottenham have almost become synonymous with utilising homegrown talent in recent years, and they don’t come much better than Sessegnon.
He looks destined for a big move sooner or later, and he wouldn’t be able to find anywhere better than Spurs as he looks to continue his development.
It’s a lot of money to be considering spending on a teenager, but he’s worth every penny.
