The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are fearing the worst regarding the long-term future of Toby Alderweireld in London. The Belgian defender has struggled with injury this term, and the emergence of the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies have proven that the 29-year-old is no longer the defensive requirement that he once was.
That said, fans are still well aware of what he can do, and so the prospect of losing him – given that he is yet to sign a new deal – is a concerning thought for our resident Lilywhites.
However, Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t appear to be of the same opinion, at least according to the Telegraph. The Telegraph is reporting that the Argentine is expected to be open to cashing in on the defender, provided that Tottenham’s asking price is met.
It’s hard to see Pochettino feeling the same way 12 months ago, but it has been a tough year or so for Alderweireld. His injury problems have been frequent, whilst Tottenham’s defence has impressed in his absence. As such, the Belgian is no longer quite as vital to Tottenham’s team.
That said, Spurs won’t want to lose him for anything less than what he’s worth, and given that Transfer Markt rate him at £31.5 million, Pochettino will clearly be expecting a hefty sum to even consider a departure.
A sale does make sense, but only at the right price. Alderweireld hasn’t gotten any worse, but Tottenham’s defence has simply gotten better in his absence.
The fact that so many teams, including PSG, are said to be interested is very important – as that could drive his price up even further.
Tottenham may be keen to sell this summer, but they should only do so at the right price.
