Tottenham’s lack of major recent signings has, rightfully, made headlines over the last six months. Spurs failed to bring in a single player during the summer, the only team in the English top flight to succumb to that feat, and that remains a sticking point for many fans.
Granted, the club have still done well this season, but where would they be if they had signed a major player or two? It’s the old, classic – what if? If they had signed a new central midfielder, or maybe a new forward, would they be in a better position? It’s hard to know, of course, but one thing is certain: Mauricio Pochettino will be desperate for a new face or two in January.
However, he’s apparently already missed out on one of his targets. According to the Evening Standard, Tottenham held talks with Borussia Dortmund over a move for Christian Pulisic, but he has now, of course, moved to Chelsea.
Now, we aren’t to know how far these talks went. However, it’s clear that Spurs had interest in the player, and with good reason. He would have offered Pochettino a fantastic option down the right-hand side, with his pace, energy and technical ability all combining to make him one of Borussia Dortmund’s most impressive young players. Furthermore, at just 20-years-old, the American has so much room for further growth.
However, having fallen short in their pursuit of the player – it’s fair to suggest that this will leave Mauricio Pochettino feeling even more frustrated. Not only has he missed out on an incredible player, but to make things worse, that player has moved to Tottenham’s arch rivals, highlighting the club’s transfer failings once again.
Let’s not forget, too, that Chelsea spent big over the summer, and they aren’t even in the Champions League this season. Yet, still, within two days of the transfer window opening, they’ve spent big to land a top target; whilst Spurs are still wondering what is on the horizon.
This highlights the problem at the club, and it’s something they need to solve, and fast. Let’s assume even for a moment that Tottenham’s interest in Pulisic was just that, and let’s suggest that they had no real intention of making a bid. This point still stands; Chelsea are already on the first corner of the lap, whilst Spurs are struggling to keep up. A major signing could help transform the season, and they’re yet to find it.
