The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are still hopeful that their side will land a deal or two before the summer is out…
Tottenham are the only Premier League side yet to spend any money this summer, and whilst their squad is very strong, it is clear that they still need to improve before the start of the season.
Kyle Walker’s sale is now an even bigger obstacle for Pochettino to overcome, though, with a recent injury to Kieran Trippier putting Tottenham’s problems in the role into perspective. Indeed, the Evening Standard is reporting that Tottenham are still keen to sign a new right-back to replace Kyle Walker, with Tottenham’s options in the role looking increasingly limited at present following the injury to Trippier.
Significantly, Pochettino is said to view Kyle Walker-Peters as not yet ready for the role, and whilst Eric Dier could fill in, that solution clearly isn’t a perfect one.
Trippier is in with a chance of making the opening day, but his fitness is a real concern at present.
Walker was sold to Man City for big money, so there is certainly no shortage of funds at White Hart Lane, but with a new season on the horizon, Mauricio Pochettino clearly has his work cut out.
Tottenham’s hesitancy to spend big on foreign imports whilst simultaneously giving a chance to young players is something to be commended, but the Lilywhites are at a crossroads at present.
Another year without a major trophy could see the side begin to splinter, and Pochettino could lose some key players as a result, and this is something to be avoided.
However, to win trophies he needs established stars, and so he needs to invest over the coming weeks.
A replacement right-back is an essential piece of the puzzle, and Pochettino needs to wrap a move up quickly.
