Tottenham are set to take on Liverpool later today in a game that is sure to test their quality. They’ve managed to some big wins already so far this season, but a loss against Watford in their last fixture brought their expectations crashing back down to earth.
Beating the Reds, then, will go a long way to determining whether they’re up to the task of battling for the Premier League title this season. As with any game against a good team, though, personnel selection is important, and for Pochettino, his defence is a particularly important facet.
Liverpool’s attack is deadly, and so quality is needed to hold that back. We recently made the case that the quartet of Ben Davies, Kieran Trippier, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen would be Pochettino’s best bet – but it appears as though fans disagree.
We asked fans which defence Pochettino should pick, and in response, a whopping 71% of fans voted to see Trippier, Alderweireld and Vertonghen joined by Danny Rose, as opposed to Ben Davies.
Over the last year, Davies has seen a lot more game time than Rose for Tottenham, and he’s looked good. Strong defensively and capable offensively, he, alongside Kieran Trippier, has made the flanks far more useful for Tottenham.
However, clearly buoyed by Rose’s brilliant display for England against Switzerland, it appears as though Spurs fans would prefer to see him back in the team. He’s been inconsistent for Spurs as of late, but his quality on his day is unrivalled. It would be a risk for Pochettino to go for Rose, but it’s clear that fans want to see it nonetheless.
