The Portugese media claim that several Premier League clubs – including Liverpool and Tottenham – are interested in Porto winger Christian Atsu, a highly rated 20 year old.
The amount of truth to this rumour is seriously up for question, considering there isn’t a single media outlet with more than a couple of lines on the story – which originated with local reporters in the city of Porto.
The young winger spent last season on loan with Rio Ave, where he was one of the most consistent performers for the Portugese Primeira Liga club, playing 27 times and scoring 6 goals.
It would appear to most that Spurs are favourites for his signature, due to their current status as one of the top 5 teams in the country, but also due to Andres Villas-Boas’s ties to Porto.
It was AVB that brought the youngster through the ranks, giving him his senior debut in the 2010/11 season. Presumably Atsu has a lot of respect for the coach that won everything in Portugal, and will be safe in the knowledge that his career would be in good, caring hands.
As of yet, there is no price being attached to his head, although it must be in the several millions. With very little experience of football at any level, and none in a league as high profile as the Premier League, his signature would be a bit of a gamble. If Spurs fans do sign him, they can expect a couple of years before seeing him in the first team, particularly given the competition for spaces on the wing at Tottenham.
It’s best to play it cool with this story for now; there may be plenty of stories across the media, but the lack of substantial content in any of them suggests it is a chain reaction of stories, built from very little.
It is, at least, a good sign that AVB wants to bring some youngsters into the club, giving us the first indication that he is interested in the long term future at White Hart Lane.
