Manchester United

Portugeezer!

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has made another surprise move in the transfer market as he looks set to complete the signing striker Tiago Manuel Dias Ferreira from Portuguese club Vitoria Guimaraes.

The 20 year old is set to have a medical at the United after agreeing personal terms with the Red Devils yesterday and is poised to join the club in a deal which is believed to be in the region of £7 million.

While the signing is a welcome addition to the United attacking line, how much do we know about the 20 year old striker? and does the striker, commonly known as ‘Bebe’, have all the necessary attributes to follow the likes of Eric Cantona, Andy Cole and Ruud Van Nistelrooy in becoming a highly regarded Premier League star?

Ferreira is considered to be one of the best young talents in Portuguese football and had been on the radar of Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho in recent weeks, but it is Old Trafford where the players future lies after United swooped for the player just 5 weeks after he joined Guimaraes.

Before joining the Superliga club, Bebe had played just one professional season for third division outfit Estrela da Amadora where he seemingly impressed enough to attract interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs and eventually complete this fairytale journey by arriving at the Theatre of Dreams.

Manchester United have a history of signing highly regarded young Portuguese players in recent years with Ferreira joining the likes of Nani and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo in moving to Old Trafford from Portugal.

Despite never making a competitive appearance for Guimaraes, it is believed the recommendation to sign Bebe came from Fergson’s former assistant manager, Carlos Queiroz, who is now in charge of the Portuguese national side, after an impressive preseason with the Portuguese club.

Even though Ferguson claimed in recent weeks that he was not looking to add to his squad, Bebe will join Mexican international Javier Hernandez as the newest additions to last seasons league runners up, adding more firepower to an already plentiful front line as the club look to take Chelsea’s crown this season and grab their record breaking 19th league title in the process.
