The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to seeing what Kieran Trippier can do this season…
The defender managed to force his way into Mauricio Pochettino’s plans last season ahead of Kyle Walker, having impressed on the right-hand side of the Tottenham defence.
He kept his place for the Premier League run-in, and Tottenham’s decision to sell Walker this summer seems to hint that Pochettino is backing Trippier to step up and become a regular going forward.
Unfortunately, there have been fears that the defender could be out for an extended period of time after suffering an injury earlier this summer, leaving Tottenham with no recognised, experienced right-backs ahead of their season opener against Newcastle on Sunday.
However, they have now received a boost in that regard, with the Evening Standard reporting that Trippier has received a fitness boost and could be back in action in less than a month. According to the Evening Standard, scans have revealed only minor damage, and as a result he could be back in time to face Everton on September 9th.
This is, of course, key for Tottenham, particularly given the lack of depth in the role at present.
Still, they’re going to have to cope without him for the opening period of the season, and Mauricio Pochettino will have his work cut out to replace him adequately.
Trippier had a real coming of age last season, and so it is very disappointing that he will miss out on the start of the season. However, in the grand scheme of things, a month away is only a small part of the season, and so he will still be able to make a big impact as the campaign progresses.
What the injury does do, though, is expose Tottenham’s lack of depth – so Pochettino would be wise to recruit between now and the end of the summer.
