Possible boost for Liverpool in pursuit of defensive reinforcements

Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern have once again been critical of their team’s inability to defend after seeing the Reds throw away a three-goal lead to end up drawing 3-3 with Sevilla in the Champions League on Tuesday night, thus making them wait to qualify for the last 16.

Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash in Spain having won each of their previous four matches, in which time they had only conceded one goal. And they looked on course for a fifth victory on the spin as a Roberto Firmino brace and Sadio Mane strike gave them a 3-0 advantage at half time, but things went horribly wrong after the interval as a Wissam Ben Yedder double and a 93rd minute strike from Guido Pizarro sealed a point for the hosts, in turn keeping the group very much alive going into the final round of fixtures next month.

Subsequently, there have been many deflated Liverpudlians in the Tavern this week, yet they may well be encouraged by a recent report from La Repubblica, which suggests that Reds target Emerson Palmieri could be let go by Roma in January.

The 23-year-old made the move to the Italian giants back in 2015 and has since played 45 games for the club, netting two goals and laying on one assist in the process.

However, his current campaign has been decimated by a cruciate ligament rapture he sustained back in May, with the left-back having yet to appear for Eusebio de Francesco’s side in any competition thus far.

But with successive spots on the bench in their recent Serie A games, Palmieri appears to be getting back to full fitness, yet reports suggest that he will be allowed to leave in the January window for a fee believed to be around €25 million.

And with Klopp’s Liverpool having been linked with Palmieri earlier this year, alongside the horror show of a performance delivered by Alberto Moreno on Tuesday night, the Merseyside giants could well be boosted by news of the 23-year-old’s availability, and as such could seek to land him in the New Year.

Landlord’s verdict: The left-back spot at Liverpool has been a problem area for manager Jurgen Klopp in the last 12 months, with James Milner deputising there for much of last season.

And although Alberto Moreno had shown signs of recovery this term, his efforts against Sevilla on Tuesday night were nothing short of horrendous, and could well encourage Klopp to seek out replacements in January.

And one man who could be available is Roma’s Emerson Palmieri, who was linked with Liverpool over the summer, and has only just returned from time out with a cruciate ligament rupture.

And the Italian side reportedly only wanting €25 million for the full-back, it’s a move Klopp could well be interested in come the New Year.
