Tottenham fans have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern over the Christmas and New Year period after seeing their side return to form with much-needed victories over Burnley and Southampton, setting them up perfectly for 2018.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men entered the New Year sixth in the Premier League table but just four points adrift of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in fourth, although that deficit became seven on January 1 as the Reds edged past Burnley 2-1 at Turf Moor. Nonetheless, there is renewed optimism among our resident Spurs fans given the return to form of their team during December, which saw the North London outfit pick up four victories and a draw from their six matches, with the other a 4-1 loss at the hands of Premier League leaders Manchester City.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for those Tottenham fans lining up at the bar to get their teeth into, not least a recent report from Il Mattino (via talkSPORT) which suggests that they have suffered a potential blow in pursuit of Fiorentina forward Federico Chiesa.
The 20-year-old came up through the ranks at the Italian club to make his senior debut for the side back in August 2016, starting their 2-1 defeat to giants Juventus in the opening game of the 2016/17 Serie A season.
And the Italy Under-21 international has since gone from strength to strength with eight goals and seven assists in 53 subsequent appearances for Fiorentina, four goals and four assists of which have come in the league this term to help them to eighth place in Serie A.
And his fine exploits have reportedly attracted the attention of Pochettino’s Spurs, yet recent reports suggest that the North London side may have suffered a blow in pursuit of Chiesa as Napoli are set to up the ante by making a £35 million bid for the youngster.
Thus, Tottenham very much face an uphill battle landing this exciting January deal.
Landlord’s verdict: Tottenham haven’t quite enjoyed the season many of their supporters were hoping for so far, with Spurs outside of the Premier League’s top four heading into the New Year.
Nonetheless, it does appear that manager Mauricio Pochettino is seeking January reinforcements, with reports suggesting that he is interested in landing Fiorentina’s exciting talent Federico Chiesa this month.
However, recent reports suggest that Napoli are seeking the initiative by making a £35 million bid for the 20-year-old in a bid to keep him in Italy, leaving Spurs with a battle to land a forward who has scored four and assisted four in 18 Serie A matches this term, and appears destined for a bright future in the game.
