Potential boost for Klopp in January pursuit of defensive reinforcements

Liverpool supporters have been somewhat subdued in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side only muster a 0-0 draw at home to West Brom on Wednesday night, thus extending their winless home run in the Premier League to three matches.

Jurgen Klopp’s men were held by champions Chelsea back on November 25 following Willian’s late strike, and the Reds were again denied three points in the Merseyside derby on Sunday as a Wayne Rooney penalty 13 minutes from time secured a 1-1 draw for Sam Allardyce’s Everton. And Klopp’s men made it three without a win at Anfield in the league as Alan Pardew’s resolute Baggies deservedly clinched a 0-0 draw on Wednesday night, becoming only the third team this season, behind the Manchester duo, to stop Liverpool from scoring in a Premier League match.

Subsequently, there have been many downbeat Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, yet their mood could well be improved if a recent report from Correire dello Sport (via Sport Witness) is anything to go by, which outlines a potential boost for manager Klopp in pursuit of Roma’s Emerson Palmieri.

The 23-year-old left-back made the move to the Serie A giants back in 2015 and has since gone on to make 46 appearances for the club, including 25 in the league last term to help the side to second place in the Italian top-flight under Luciano Spalletti, who became Inter Milan manager over the summer.

And Palmieri’s fine efforts reportedly attracted the interest of Klopp’s Liverpool during the close season, only for a cruciate ligament injury to thwart their advances, an injury which has restricted the Brazilian star to just 15 minutes of first team action this term.

However, the Reds reportedly retain their interest in the defender, and recent reports have outlined a possible boost for manager Klopp as the Italian club would consider a bid of €20 million for the 23-year-old in the January window.

And with Liverpool evidently needing defensive reinforcements in the forthcoming window, this news is sure to come as a big boost to Klopp and the club’s supporters.

Landlord’s verdict: Alberto Moreno’s dire efforts at left-back last season forced manager Jurgen Klopp into playing midfielder James Milner in that position, before snapping up Hull City’s Andrew Robertson during the summer.

Yet the Reds were reportedly interested in Roma’s Emerson Palmieri during the close season in a bid to bolster their defensive ranks, before injury thwarted their chances, and given that they reportedly retain that interest, the Merseysiders are likely to be encouraged by recent reports suggesting that they could land him for as little as €20 million.

And in today’s money, that’s not a lot at all, and could well appeal to Klopp and the club’s hierarchy as they pursue much-needed defensive reinforcements in January.
