As well as up front, full-back has also been a problem for Maurizio Sarri and Chelsea this season.
Marcos Alonso has really struggled for form, while Cesar Azpilicueta has not been as consistent as he has been in recent seasons.
As a result, the Blues could now move for at least one new full-back in the summer, with The Telegraph reporting they are interested in signing Nice’s Youcef Atal should their transfer ban be delayed.
With that in mind, here are two potential consequences that could follow the Algerian’s possible arrival at Stamford Bridge.
Premier League Loan For Reece James
There has been plenty of talk about Reece James staying in Chelsea’s first-team squad next season following his stunning campaign with Wigan Athletic this term (Evening Standard).
But with Atal potentially joining the west London club and Azpilicueta still among the ranks, James would likely find minutes hard to come by.
Furthermore, the 19-year-old could be forced into pushing for another loan move, this time to a Premier League outfit, in a quest for regular game time.
Cesar Azpilicueta Gets Benched
As already mentioned, Azpilicueta has been far from his best this season.
On top of some very poor defensive performances, the 29-year-old has also been extremely underwhelming when going forward.
Azpilicueta’s first touch in the final third has let him down and slowed down attacks, while his crosses usually get blocked.
Unless he improves drastically in those areas, the Spain international could easily find himself on the bench and playing second fiddle to Atal.
