Replacing Aaron Ramsey is without question the most important summer objective for Unai Emery this off-season.
The Welshman will end an 11-year stay in north London when the midfielder heads to Juventus this summer on a free transfer, leaving a big void in the Arsenal that will desperately need filling this summer and no later.
A handful of names have been churned up by the press as to who can replace Ramsey, and according to BILD, one player who could in contention is Hoffenheim midfielder Kerem Demirbay.
The 25-year-old German has been one of the Bundesliga’s outstanding central midfielders since making the move to Julian Nagelsmann’s Hoffenheim, and this season Demirbay has yet again been impressive, scoring four goals and assisting six.
With a potential release clause of just £22.5 million, what are the potential consequences of Demirbay joining the Gunners this summer?
Arsenal secure Ramsey replacement
At 25 and playing some of the best football of his career, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Demirbay step into Ramsey’s shoes with ease.
As well as having similar qualities to the Welsh midfielder, Emery will be able to coach and develop the German international into the final product he wants for a Ramsey replacement, and with Demirbay’s already impressive skillset, the Spaniard could craft the attacking playmaker into one of the Premier League’s top players.
Future profits secured in Demirbay
At £22.5 million, dramatically cheaper wages than Ramsey and room to grow in the future, Demirbay makes sense financially for Arsenal as well as what he can do on the pitch.
Arsenal have a reportedly limited transfer budget this summer, and although losing Ramsey is a big loss for the team, it will be saving the club millions every year on the wage bill compared to what Demirbay could be offered, and if the German can impress in the Premier League, he will be setting himself up to win a big-money move elsewhere, resulting in profit for the north London side.
