If you were to ask an Arsenal fan before the start of the season that Matteo Guendouzi would be one of Unai Emery’s best signings, they would have called you mad.
The 20-year-old midfielder joined the Gunners as an absolute unknown from Ligue 2 side Lorient for a reported fee of £7 million and has since gone on the be one of the most highly rated youngsters in the European game, making over 40 appearances this season alone for Arsenal and recently being valued by the CIES Football Laboratory as the second most valuable U-21 player in world football behind Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.
Guendouzi has been a big surprise and success in north London, and now according to the Sun, Arsenal are to reward their French midfielder with a new contract that will see his wages double to £75,000-a-week.
With the France U-21 midfielder seen as the future of the club, what are the potential consequences of Guendouzi signing a new deal with Arsenal?
Nail in the coffin for Elneny
Mohamed Elneny has seen very few minutes this season with Arsenal, and the news of Guendouzi committing his long-term future with the club will all but signal the end for the Egyptian midfielder.
The former FC Basel man is likely to leave north London this summer no matter what happens to Guendouzi’s new deal, but if Arsenal does offer their midfield prospect more money and show that they’re committed to using him in the foreseeable future, it will be the end of Elneny’s time in north London.
Fans praise swift action
Arsenal have rightly been criticised a lot in the past for being unable to commit their stars to long-term deals and thus losing them to rivals, and tying down Guendouzi at the club for the next few years will be a step in the right direction.
Robin van Persie, Alexis Sanchez and this season Aaron Ramsey have all left the club way below their market value due to Arsenal’s inability to extend their contracts, but if the Gunners can do it for Guendouzi, then it will show the fans that they are now willing to keep hold of their star assets.
Arsenal fans, will Guendouzi be a star for the club in the next few years? Let us know!
