There was once a time when Maxi Gomez was the only player West Ham fans couldn’t stop talking about, and yet it is still unknown how he didn’t end up signing for them.
The Celta Vigo striker was highly tipped to join the Hammers in the January transfer window, with Sky Sports even reporting that the youngster was set to join the club this summer after a deal was reached by the two parties, and yet still nothing has been confirmed by anybody.
The deal looks to have gone cold, but with the summer transfer window close to opening rumours have remerged about Gomez joining West Ham, and according to the Standard, Manuel Pellegrini wants to sign the striker as part of a new-form attack at the club.
With the Hammers needing reinforcements in the attack, what are the potential consequences of Gomez joining West Ham this summer?
Quality striker finally arrives
It’s felt like an eternity since West Ham last had a genuine world-class striker, and although Gomez is far from that tag, the Uruguayan international has all the attributes to become one of the best in the game.
The 22-year-old continues to improve every season and at a team like West Ham, there is no doubt Gomez can become an even better striker playing with the likes of Felipe Anderson and Marko Arnautovic, as well as learning under fellow South American Manuel Pellegrini.
Hernandez’s makes for the exit
With another striker in east London, it is likely one will have to leave in order to make room for Gomez, and for Javier Hernandez, it could be time on his time in the Premier League.
The Mexican international has been underwhelming since his move to West Ham two years ago, and with fans keen on Pellegrini to change up the personnel in the striker area, Hernandez could be heading for the exit door if the club opts to sign Gomez as a starting player for next season.
