Potential consequences of Sean Longstaff’s injury

Potential consequences of Sean Longstaff’s injury - Newcastle United

Newcastle United fans have been loving life under Rafa Benitez in recent times as they finally appear to be hitting their stride in the Premier League, but it didn’t take long for negative news to hit the surface as Sean Longstaff has suffered an injury that will be sure to worry many supporters.

Sadly, it appears as if Newcastle will be lucky to get the youngster back out on the field before the end of the season, as according to Sky Sports, Sean Longstaff is likely to miss the remainder of the current campaign.

The 21-year-old was forced off at half-time during the Magpies’ defeat at West Ham on Saturday and saw a specialist yesterday, with it now being confirmed that he’s suffered a knee ligament injury.

Indeed, supporters were just starting to warm to the youngster after his recent dominant performances in the side, but they may now have to wait until next season to see what more he has to offer.

With that being said, here are the potential consequences of Longstaff’s injury…

Sky Sports reported on the 13th of February 2019 that Jonjo Shelvey was back in Newcastle training as he stepped up his recovery from a niggling thigh injury. And, the Independent recently reported that he is fit.

Of course, many fans may have been wondering where the 27-year-old would fit in with Isaac Hayden and Longstaff building an impressive partnership in the middle of midfield recently, but Longstaff’s potential season-ending injury could force Rafa Benitez into calling Shelvey into action with Diame struggling in the current campaign.

Rafa Benitez has worked wonders in terms of aiding Sean Longstaff’s development at Newcastle United in the current campaign, as he’s come a long way since making his Premier League debut back in December of last year.

Sadly, Mohamed Diame, Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey are the Magpies’ only central midfielders with Longstaff now set for a period out on the sideline. Diame hasn’t been able to give fans the performances they deserve and Shelvey hasn’t featured since the 5th of January, so Benitez could be very worried about the void left in midfield.

Newcastle United fans, how do you think your side will cope without Longstaff? Surely Rafa Benitez won’t turn to Mohamed Diame…
