The Crystal Palace fans in the Transfer Tavern are becoming increasingly concerned by the prospect of relegation this season, as they currently sit in 18th place in the Premier League with just 8 games remaining to steer clear of the bottom three.
Roy Hodgson’s side slumped to their 4th straight defeat in the league last Saturday against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Their defeat concluded a run of three straight matches against top-four contenders in which they were narrowly defeated against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Chelsea.
The resident Eagles faithful propping up our bar were frustrated that they couldn’t take a single point from the aforementioned fixtures, despite playing relatively well and coming close to clinching a point against both Spurs and Man United. However, the good news for Palace is that their run in is a desirable one on paper, as the majority of their remaining fixtures are against sides in the bottom-half of the table.
If Palace are to claim a handful of vital victories during the business end of the season, they will need Christian Benteke to finally justify his price-tag and find the back of the net at crucial moments. So far this season the Belgian international has only managed to score 2 goals from 24 Premier League appearances, which is an abysmal record for a player who cost the club £28 million in 2016.
Considering his current vein of form, Palace would be lucky to generate any interest for his services in the summer transfer window. However, according to The Sun, the club are holding out hope that a team from China will be interested in signing him for £20 million in the summer.
Although that figure might appear slightly ambitious considering his form this season, his history in the English top-flight suggests he is performing well below his true level at this point in time, and that factor alone could potentially count in Palace’s favour. Despite this, it seems extremely unlikely that Benteke will become the prolific striker that Palace want and expect him to be, so they would be wise to cash in on him in the summer and seek the services of a proven goalscorer.
The funds accumulated from his sale would enable the club to reinvest in various areas of the squad and potentially instigate an improvement which could ensure they avoid a relegation battle next season. £20 million certainly does not represent a huge transfer kitty in this day and age, but if Hodgson is wise with his funds then Palace could be set for a vastly improved season next time around.Like what the TT have on offer?
