Although the transfer window is set to close in Thursday, Newcastle’s transfer business is still very much still underway.

Newcastle haven’t exactly splashed the cash this summer, spending £22.13 million on the squad so far.

Having finished 10th in the league, Mike Ashley has failed to heavily reinvest in a squad that Rafa Benitez worked wonders with.

The club has lost Mikel Merino, Aleksandar Mitrovic, and Chancel Mbemba while bringing in six players.

However, with Floriane Lejeune’s injury, the club are in desperate need of a centre-back to provide some depth behind Jamaal Lascelles and new signing, Fabian Schar.

Due to that lack of depth in defence, The Times via HITC is reporting that Newcastle are now interested in signing Jairo Riedewald from Crystal Palace.

The Breakdown

The former Ajax man has fallen out of favour at Palace having been signed by former boss Frank de Boer.

A versatile player, Riedewald can play across the back four and also as a holding midfielder.

While Newcastle have brought in Ki, having Riedewald as cover in midfield would be a great option. Moreover, at left-back Benitez only has Paul Dummett as his legitimate starter, again Riedewald could prove to be a vital player to have in reserve.

At 21, the Palace defender still has tonnes of potential and could really thrive from being under the tutelage of Rafa Benitez.

With the Palace looking to sell, Newcastle should bid for a player who could turn out to be an absolute steal.
