Newcastle United supporters were drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend following the North East giants’ crushing 4-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, although talk of a takeover bid has improved the mood among our resident Magpies fans.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash against the Red Devils off the back of two successive Premier League defeats, yet took a surprise lead against Jose Mourinho’s side thanks to Dwight Gayle’s first goal of the campaign. But their delight was short-lived as goals from Anthony Martial, Chris Smalling, Paul Pogba, and Romelu Lukaku secured a comprehensive win for United, thus inflicting a sixth Premier League defeat of the campaign on Newcastle, and their third in succession.
Thus, there was a subdued atmosphere among our resident Magpies fans in the Tavern over the weekend, although some of that gloom has been lifted by recent reports that Amanda Staveley has launched a £300 million bid for the club.
And already speculation is building about potential deals at Newcastle in January, with a recent report from The Sun suggesting that goalkeeper Karl Darlow could be on his way out of St James’ Park and heading to Steve Bruce’s Aston Villa.
The Magpies shot-stopper played a key part in helping Benitez’s side return to the Premier League last season, but has this term found himself behind the impressive Rob Elliot in the pecking order, and thus facing an uncertain future at the North East giants.
And were the Baggies to indeed land the Manchester United shot-stopper, a deal could be in the offing for Darlow when the window reopens in January.
Landlord’s verdict: Karl Darlow played an integral part in helping Newcastle return to the Premier League last season, but the Englishman has been unable to dispose Rob Elliot of the gloves so far this term.
The 27-year-old’s only appearance this term came in their Carabao Cup defeat to his ex-employers Nottingham Forest back in August, and as such his future at St James’ Park appears far from certain heading into the January window.
Yet Steve Bruce’s Aston Villa are one side reportedly keeping tabs on Darlow, as they themselves could lose current number one Sam Johnstone to West Brom, which would certainly leave them short in the goalkeeping ranks heading into the second half of the campaign.
And with Darlow having performed well at Championship level before, as well as being part of a side to have won the division, he could be the ideal replacement for Johnstone should he leave for the Hawthorns.
