Potential problems emerge for Rodgers in pursuit of January target

Celtic supporters have been in pretty high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this season after seeing their team extend their unbeaten domestic run to 68 matches in what has been a great start to the campaign for the Bhoys.

Brendan Rodgers’ men swept aside all before them in Scottish football last term by winning the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup, and Scottish League Cup, and they are well on their way to retaining all three having already defended the latter with victory over Motherwell last month. And they lead the league by five points after 16 games as well after picking up a 2-2 draw from their trip to Easter Road, with goals from Efe Ambrose and Oli Shaw cancelling out a brace from Celtic’s Scott Sinclair earlier in the second half, leaving them five points clear of nearest challengers Rangers and Aberdeen at the summit of the Scottish Premiership.

Consequently, there have been many delighted Bhoys fans in the Tavern this season, yet they are unlikely to be overly thrilled by a recent report from The Daily Mirror, which suggests that Premier League side West Ham have joined the race for reported Celtic target Liam Moore ahead of the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old currently plays his trade at Championship club Reading and has done so since 2016, in which time he has helped the club reach the play-off final at Wembley back in May, only for his missed penalty in the shootout to contribute to their defeat to Huddersfield Town.

Nonetheless, the former Leicester City centre-back has seriously impressed in the heart of Jaap Stam’s backline in the last 15 months or so, and as such Rodgers’ Celtic were linked with a move for the Englishman earlier in the season in a bid to bolster their defensive ranks.

Yet recent reports suggest that the former Reading chief could face a problem in landing Moore, as David Moyes’ West Ham are also thought to be interested in the defender, as the Hammers seek to improve a backline that have conceded 32 Premier League goals this term, only Stoke City (36) have shipped more.

Thus, it very much remains to be seen whether Celtic are able to lure Moore north of the border in January.

Landlord’s verdict: Liam Moore has seriously impressed since moving to Championship side Reading back in the summer of 2016, in which time he helped them to the play-off final at Wembley back in May only for Jaap Stam’s men to lose to Huddersfield Town in a penalty shootout.

And his excellent efforts in the heart of the Royals backline attracted the interest of Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic earlier in the campaign, yet they now face a battle to land the 24-year-old as reports suggest that West Ham are also eyeing up a move for the former Leicester City man.

And with Royals chief Stam making it clear that he is no mood to sell his best players, it was hard enough for the Bhoys to lure Moore away from the Madejski Stadium – that task has now become significantly harder given the Hammers’ involvement in the race.
