Potential worrying news for Newcastle as key figure sheds light on ‘tricky’ situation – Report

Newcastle United fans here in the Tavern are praying that Rafa Benitez will stay at the club, as his future continues to be surrounded with doubt.

The Magpies will be desperate to keep hold of Rafa Benitez in the summer, as they’ll then be able to prepare for next season and could even challenge for Europe. Although, many of our local northerners received some slightly worrying news, as according to Sky Sports, Rafa Benitez says discussions over extending his contract as Newcastle manager will be “tricky”.

Indeed, the Spaniard has a year left to run on his current Newcastle deal and has previously indicated that he will only stay at St James’ Park if he gets the guarantees he wants about the club’s ambition and the funding to back it.

However, when he was recently asked if he wanted to stay at the club, he said this: “That is a tricky question. I said in an interview the other day I decided to stay because of the potential, the fans and the city. Then we have to do what we have to do.”

Benitez confirmed that contract talks are ongoing but have made no significant developments, however, he vowed to continue to fight for his corner, while insisting his was not a negative approach.

He said: “Sometimes people think that is negative, but I think it is a positive because it means you care. I am not thinking about myself.

Landlord’s Verdict:

The Spaniard has been a breath of fresh air since taking over at the club back in 2016, as he managed to secure promotion to the Premier League and has secured top-flight safety in the current campaign. However, it remains to be seen as to whether the Newcastle boss will be able to agree terms with the club, as Mike Ashley continues to affect his decision.
