The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling relieved that they have opened up some breathing space between them and the teams below them in the Premier League. It was looking a little touch and go for a while, with Rafael Benitez struggle to get the best out of his team, but now their safety in the English top flight is looking likely.
Next season, though, the challenge will be every bit as difficult, and so Benitez needs to bring in a few more players this summer. In truth, he needs proven quality, and one player that would fit those demands perfectly is Fernando Llorente.
Though he has struggled at Tottenham, Llorente has a storied career behind him that will stand him in good stead for a move to St James’ Park. A nomadic forward, Llorente has impressed across Europe, with spells in Spain, Italy and, indeed, England all combining to highlight him as one of Europe’s most consistent forwards over the last few years.
He’s won trophies that most can only dream of, with a number of Serie A titles and a World Cup both particularly impressive trophies that are currently in his cabinet.
Significantly, his spell at Swansea City prior to moving to London should give Benitez particular confidence. He was lethal for the Swans, bagging 15 league goals in his final season, and so he knows his way around the league – particularly at the bottom of it.
With Newcastle clearly needing proven quality, they would struggle to do better than the Spaniard. And with reports from the Evening Standard suggesting that a sale is likely this summer, it could be the perfect time for the Magpies to strike.
