Liverpool supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side beat Manchester City 4-3 at Anfield in a thrilling encounter on Sunday, in turn becoming the first team to defeat the Citizens in the Premier League this season.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their encounter with the North West outfit off the back of a 17-match unbeaten run in all competitions, a streak which has seen them usurp both Arsenal and Tottenham in the race for a top four finish. And the Reds continued their impressive run as goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah secured the three points for the Merseyside giants, thus inflicting a first league defeat of the season on Pep Guardiola’s City, although they remain hot favourites to seal the title come May.
Thus, there has been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of which are unlikely to be overly thrilled by a recent report from Calcio Mercato (via The Liverpool Echo), which suggests that their side face competition from Paris Saint-Germain for Roma goalkeeper Alisson.
The 25-year-old shot-stopper made the move to the Serie A giants back in 2016 after beginning his professional career in Brazil, and he has since gone from strength to strength with 40 appearances for the Italian outfit, in which time he has conceded just 39 goals and kept an impressive 16 clean sheets.
And, unsurprisingly, the Brazil international has attracted much interest from other top clubs around Europe, with Liverpool one side reportedly keen, yet recent reports suggest that Klopp could face a huge battle to land the 25-year-old as European heavyweights PSG are also thought to be interested.
Thus, it very much remains to be seen whether the Reds, who are clearly in need of a quality goalkeeper, can indeed secure Alisson’s signature come the summer.
Landlord’s verdict: Both Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius have done little in the last few years to suggest that they are the sort of goalkeeper Liverpool need to be challenging for major titles.
As such, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is seemingly on the lookout for reinforcements in that key area, with Roma’s Alisson one man reportedly on his radar ahead of the summer.
Yet the 25-year-old is also thought to be on Paris Saint-Germain’s wishlist, news which is sure to come as a big blow to Liverpool, who may not be able to compete with the financial power of the French giants, and as such may miss out on the Brazil international this summer.
